The UBS Office Building is located in a busy commercial area of Zurich. Together with
adjacent building, the UBS building forms a three sided closed forecourt, bounded by a
rather unsightly street to the north. The three levels of this new space are devoted to
different themes: water, plants and stone. These elements form totally different areas, some
of which encourage activity, and others are calm peaceful spaces ideal for contemplation.
The element of stone can be seen in the granite laps, used to pave the linear framework,
with porphyry cobblestones everywhere else. The use of porphyry to pave the non-linear
spaces emphasises the radial layout. The plant element consists basically of lawn, which
covers the recreational areas, and acacia trees separating the different spaces in the third
dimension. A reflecting water pool in front of the building entrance mirrors the entrance roof.
The water flows over steps and small waterfalls, through various pools down to the lowest
pool hosting Ivan Pestalozzi’s sculpture, called the Time Machine. This object, dominating
the entire space, is a 12 m high filigree iron structure. The time is indicated by 24 polyester
balls, one of which drops into the pond every hour.
